Wide angle lenses

The focal length of the lens used when shooting the panorama determines the number of photos you will have to shoot to produce the panorama.

The table on the right shows roughly how many photos (N) are required to shoot a 360 cylindrical panorama with the camera in portrait mode and about 20% overlap either side on each photograph. The focal lengths are 35mm equivalent focal lengths. This table clearly shows fewer photos will be required at shorter focal lengths.

focal length N
24 8
35 10
50 15
70 20

If your camera has a zoom setting then it is usually best to zoom the lens all the way out. It is good practice to check the camera's focal length setting before shooting any panorama.
